Sharing an apartment with a furry friend doesn’t require dismissing style and function. Renters can decorate stylishly and strategically while sharing space with pets. The key is choosing the right materials and organizing to accommodate pets’ needs while considering the available space in the apartment.
For pet owners looking to move, or those trying to better settle into their current homes, here are some great tips for pet-friendly apartment design.
1. Dedicate an Area to the Pet
Let pets have their own space to provide a sense of security and help isolate pet hair. Use the chosen spot to lay out a blanket and store a basket of toys and supplies. For stylish options, choose accessory colors and patterns that coordinate with the design trend of the apartment. Wall hooks and coat racks are fashionable, great for hanging leashes and act as space savers in smaller apartments.
2. Choose Pet-Friendly Upholstery and Prints
Furniture fabrics such as crypton, leather and microfiber are the best materials to hold up against stains and scratches. When picking colors, opt for darker, neutral tones for a contemporary look or colorful patterns for a bold statement; both styles reduce the visibility of scuff marks from furry paws. Carpet absorbs odors and traps pet hair, so hardwood flooring or tiles is better in an apartment. If renters choose to include rugs in their apartment designs, opt for low-pile, printed or colored styles for easy clean-up and disguised pet hair.
3. Stylish Storage
Pets tend to get destructive when bored, so keep shoes, remote controls and any other items pets might be tempted to chew in a neatly stored area. Storage solutions are imperative to apartment living with pets to safeguard valuables, but they also add character and style to the home. Buying pet food in bulk is a money saver, but large bags around the house become eyesores and tend to spill easily. The solution: sealable food storage options that work with apartment décor. Check some out here.
4. Be Clean
Pet hair can accumulate quickly in apartments, so set time aside, 1-2 times weekly, to vacuum floors and furniture. For a quick fix, use a damp rubber dishwashing glove to run over the upholstery to pick up hair. Patiently teach pets good house-training tricks such as staying off of the sofa, sleeping in their designated areas and staying away from left out shoes. Accidents happen so set up a pet relief station in a tiled area such as the bathroom or laundry room, and invest in machine-washable pet bed covers.
Pets can add a unique level of enjoyment to the apartment experience. With a little preparation and some clever accommodating, apartments can be stylish, comfortable and functional for residents and their furry companions.
